Palumbo’s Extra Yachts brand is sporting an expanding track record. While waiting to see pictures of the new Extra 99 series of which two have already been sold, we climb on board of the Extra 86 superyacht which slots into the super yacht range beginning at 24 metres.
In an entry level of 76’ the 86’ slots nicely into it where we find the 24 metre long registered length. The Extra 86 derives from a close collaboration with Guida Design studio owned by Francesco Guida who imprinted the entire series in a very recognisable way. In fact Guida is still the main creator of a yachting style which is one with the sea. All of his project design work features and promotes ‘open air living’ with reduced vertical developments and stern decks which transform into beaches by the sea.
The Extra 86 like others from the same fleet offers a huge cockpit area which would be envied by larger yachts. The cockpit in this case is made up of a single space with a large sun bathing section, a lounge facing aft which can be shaded thanks to an open sun awning in the course of the hottest hours and a dining area protected by the sun deck’s overhang.
Two steps lead off to the submersible beach platform in the stern. another relaxing area is to be found in the bow,it is well furnished with sun pads and forward facing sofa. The sun deck contains comfortable seating as well as sun pads adjacent to the second helm controls station. A hard top covering all of this area can be installed on request.
The interior layout and the choice of materials can be ‘customized’ accordingly and can sport contemporary cool styling. A separate galley is situated on entry near the large dining table in the cockpit while the remaining open space is bright with a living room area, a dining one and a helm controls station. As in every design project by Francesco Guido the extra 86 also boasts large cut glass lateral and floor to ceiling sliding doors the latter of which are lined with solar panels. Below decks there are four cabins plus a further two for the crew. The owner suite runs full beam across at amidships while two of the remaining cabins are twins and one is a double.
Two or even three Volvo Penta IPS 1350 engines can be installed into the engine room which can push the yacht to more than 30 knots thanks to a semi-planing hull. This hull can cruise comfortably in displacing mode in fact the declared econ speed is of 12 knots with a range of 1,100 nautical miles.
